Mediation is an informal and confidential process of assisted negotiation. This process is meant to make the process of divorce easier and less expensive. Divorce and uncoupling can be one of life’s most difficult events. Mediation is a way to navigate these life altering moments with respect and dignity. Mediation will cover decisions from parenting, timesharing with minor children, division of assets and debts to child support and alimony.
Mediation can often facilitate fairer settlements than court run divorces where the judges ruling is absolute and final.
Mediation helps insulate same-sex couples from biases of courts and some judges.
Mediation maintains the privacy of the couple. Court divorces are public record where mediation is confidential. This helps the couple reduce their exposure to discrimination at work and other areas of their lives.
Mediation is more convenient, time saving, and less expensive than a litigated divorce. Typically, there are no attorneys involved. Mediation works on your schedule and the process is usually shorter than court divorces.
Mediation recognizes that couples have often been together a lot longer than their official marriage date whereas courts often do not. Mediation can make dividing assets, alimony, and childcare much more equitable and fair. This may be especially important in discussing parenting issues and time-sharing minor children. Courts may not recognize non-biological parents in the divorce proceedings.
Mediation puts the control into the couple’s hands and increases a more positive outcome. Mediation advocates individual choice with compassion, dignity and understanding. Becket Mediation wants to help couples heal from the grief of divorce, shape how they want their futures to look and get on with life.
